History

Each year a Winter Frolic button has been designed and sold by the Winter Frolic candidates. The Winter Frolic celebration has been funded solely through the sale of these buttons and the sponsorship of each girl by a business or organization. Over the years, thousands of dollars have awarded in scholarships to the incoming royalty. Since the beginning, sixteen girls have vied for the title of Winter Frolic Queen. Winter Frolic has always solicited out-of-town judges in the selection of royalty. During its history, Winter Frolic candidates have captured titles such as; Miss Minnesota Universe, Miss Minnesota Teen and Aquatennial Princess. Winter Frolic candidates are equally judged on the basis of personality, poise, academics, community involvement, and appearance. The Winter Frolic Senior Citizen King and Queen contest started in 1973 by Dave Oxman and Thelma Mattson. The first to be crowned were Queen Santi Amistadi and King Arnold Ellingson. The first Winter Frolic Fishing Contest was held in 1995 under the direction of Michelle Severson.

Winter Frolic Events sponsored each year are; the Illuminated Ski, Fun Day and the Fishing Contest at Carey Lake, the Giant Treasure Hunt (a search for the medallion and a prize of $1,000 savings bond), Sr. Citizen Coronation, the Queen Coronation, Little Mr. & Miss Irongate Mall, Coloring Contest, and the Snoball dance. The Winter Frolic Committee has added something new in 2005, the “Winter Frolic Button Contest”, with $100 a prize to the winner.

The goal of the Hibbing Winter Frolic Committee is to provide as much fun and excitement as possible during the week of Winter Frolic to all those who live or visit Hibbing during the winter season and thereby making Hibbing, Minnesota a better place to live.
